Body Awareness

Body awareness is subjective and multidimensional, including proprioception (where your body is) and interoception (what's happening below the surface, such as hunger and breathing). In my work, I am interested in the interaction between body and mind awareness and improvements in pain, function, and, ultimately, your quality of life.

It Includes:

  • Awareness of joint position and movement

  • Internal sensations such as tension, effort, and breath

  • The ability to coordinate and adapt movement

  • How our state of mind influences our movement and sensation, and vice versa.

When body awareness is reduced or disrupted, movement often becomes less efficient and more effortful. This can contribute to:

  • Persistent or hard-to-localize pain

  • Overuse or underuse of certain muscles and falling into movement compensations

  • Difficulty controlling or trusting movement

  • A feeling of disconnection from the body

  • A feeling of deep fatigue

At Fortuna, body awareness is something I train directly based on the unique needs of your situation.

Treatment may include:

  • Guided movement with specific sensory cues, with the emphasis on improving the brain’s ability to sense the body, feel physical connection and safety, and subsequently reduce pain

  • Hands-on techniques to improve tissue position

  • Pilates-based training for improved core strength and functional awareness

  • One-on-one strength and functional tasks, not just isolated exercises

The goal is not just to move more, but to move with greater clarity, efficiency, ease, and less pain.
