Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain arises from changes in how the nervous system processes sensation, not just from tissue injury. Neuropathic pain can present after disc herniations, more complex injuries such as damage to the spinal cord, with conditions like complex regional pain syndrome, cranial cervical instability, and hypermobility syndromes, or diabetes due to small fiber neuropathy. It may present as burning, tingling, hypersensitivity, or pain that feels disproportionate or difficult to localize.

You May Notice:

  • Pain that persists despite rest, treatment, or strengthening

  • Symptoms that are difficult to localize or seem to shift

  • Increased effort or fatigue with everyday movement

  • A sense that your body feels unreliable or difficult to control

How We Treat Neuropathic Pain

At Fortuna, treatment focuses on retraining how the body and nervous system interpret and respond to sensation and movement.

Care is individualized and may include:

  • Body awareness training to refine how you sense and interpret your body

  • Cognitive Multisensory Rehabilitation (CMR) techniques to improve the brain’s ability to integrate sensory input and reduce pain

  • Graded, guided movement to restore tolerance and reduce hypersensitivity

  • Neuromuscular re-education to improve coordination and efficiency

  • Targeted strength and functional training to support confident, adaptable movement

Rather than simply trying to “block” pain, this approach reorganizes how the nervous system processes input, helping movement feel safer, clearer, and less effortful over time.

The goal is not only to reduce pain, but to help you reconnect with your body and move with greater ease, control, and confidence.
